Bosch 2608594588 Multi Material Threaded Hole Saw, 64 x 40 mm

The Bosch 2608594588 is a 64 mm bi-metal hole saw with a 40 mm cutting depth, built with Vario tooth geometry to cut clean holes through steel, drywall, softwood and plastics. It fits rotary drill/drivers and impact drill/drivers via its threaded connection, and is supplied as a single piece.

Key features

  • Durable bi-metal teeth with Vario design for smooth cutting across materials
  • Multi material rated — steel, drywall, softwood and plastics
  • 64 mm diameter, 40 mm cutting depth — clears a standard stud or double-boarded partition in one pass
  • Threaded mount for a secure, quick-change fit to a standard arbor
  • Works with rotary drill/drivers and impact drill/drivers, corded or cordless

One hole saw, four material groups

Jobs rarely stay in one substrate. A single opening can pass through plasterboard, a steel stud track, a softwood noggin and a plastic conduit — and swapping accessories at each layer costs time you don't have.

This saw handles all four. Bi-metal construction welds a high-speed steel cutting edge onto a tougher, more flexible backing body: the HSS edge holds up in steel where carbon-steel teeth would blunt within a handful of holes, while the flexible body absorbs shock instead of cracking. The Vario tooth pattern varies the tooth pitch around the crown rather than keeping it constant, which breaks up the vibration harmonics that cause chatter. In practice that means less snagging as the saw moves from board into metal, and less grabbing at breakthrough.

Why 64 mm?

64 mm is a large-service size. It suits downlight and spotlight cutouts (check the cutout figure specified by the fitting), ventilation and extract ducting spigots, 50 mm waste pipe, larger cable bundles, glands and armoured cable entries, and enclosure and consumer unit entries. It's the diameter you reach for once a hole is carrying something bigger than a single cable or a small pipe.

At 40 mm cutting depth, it passes through a standard timber stud or a double-boarded partition in a single pass — no flipping the workpiece and meeting in the middle.

Built for the trades

Made for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC installers and maintenance teams who need consistent, accurate holes with minimum effort. Typical jobs:

  • Cutting downlight and ventilation openings in plasterboard ceilings and partitions
  • Boring steel studwork track, light metal enclosures and consumer unit entries
  • Drilling softwood joists, studs and battens for larger service runs
  • Making clean openings in plastic trunking, ducting, back boxes and waste pipe

Fitting and use

The threaded mount screws onto a standard threaded hole saw arbor fitted with a pilot drill (both sold separately). Changing diameter means unscrewing one saw and threading on the next — no slipping, no tools.

Large diameters need a different technique from small ones. At 64 mm the rim travels more than three times as far per revolution as a 20 mm saw, so run at a noticeably lower speed — over-speeding is the quickest way to blue the teeth — and expect meaningfully more torque. Use a firm two-handed grip and fit the side handle if your drill has one, because a large hole saw that catches will try to turn the tool rather than stall. Switch hammer action off.

Let the pilot drill establish the centre before the crown engages, then use light, steady pressure. Add cutting fluid in metal and clear the swarf regularly; ease off at breakthrough in board and timber so the saw doesn't snatch. The slug from a 64 mm cut is substantial — eject it through the side slot as soon as the cut is finished rather than letting it pack in the crown.

Frequently asked questions

What size hole does the Bosch 2608594588 cut? It cuts a 64 mm diameter hole, with a 40 mm cutting depth.

What materials will it cut? Steel, drywall, softwood and plastics. The bi-metal teeth handle sheet metal and steel stud track; the Vario tooth pitch keeps the cut smooth in softer boards and timber.

How deep will a 64mm Bosch hole saw cut? Up to 40 mm — enough to clear a standard timber stud or a double-boarded plasterboard partition in one pass.

Is 64mm the right size for a downlight? It suits many downlights, but cutout sizes vary between fittings — commonly anywhere from about 55 mm to 75 mm. Always check the cutout diameter specified by the light fitting before cutting.

What drill do I need? Rotary drill/drivers and impact drill/drivers, corded or cordless. Use a low speed — lower than you would for a small hole saw — and switch hammer action off.

Does it come with an arbor? No. The pack contains one hole saw. It has a threaded mount, so it fits a compatible threaded hole saw arbor with a pilot drill, sold separately.

What is a Vario tooth design? Vario means the tooth pitch varies around the crown instead of staying constant. Varying the pitch disrupts the vibration harmonics that cause chatter, so the saw cuts more smoothly and is less likely to snag when it passes from one material into another.

What is the difference between a bi-metal and a standard hole saw? A bi-metal hole saw welds a high-speed steel cutting edge to a flexible alloy body. The HSS edge stays sharp in metal; the softer body flexes rather than shattering under shock. A single-material carbon steel hole saw costs less but dulls quickly in steel.

Why does a large hole saw need a slower speed? Because the rim travels much further per revolution. At 64 mm the cutting edge covers more than three times the distance per turn of a 20 mm saw, so the same drill speed means far more heat at the teeth. Heat, not force, is what blunts a hole saw.

Can I use it on tiles, masonry or brick? No. This saw is specified for steel, drywall, softwood and plastics. Masonry, tile and concrete need a carbide or diamond-tipped hole saw instead.
