Why the screw tip changes the job

A conventional flat spade bit is scraped through timber: you supply the feed force with your body weight, the bit heats up, and drilling a run of joists overhead becomes genuinely tiring work.

The self-feeding thread on this bit does that job for you. The screw tip bites and pulls the bit through the material under its own thread, so you only need light pressure to keep it steady. Overhead and in confined spaces — under floors, in ceiling voids, between studs — that's the difference between an awkward job and a quick one, and it's the reason installers reach for this pattern of bit rather than a flat spade.

The wave-shaped spade does the second half. The profile shears the fibres progressively rather than all at once, and clears chips out of the hole instead of packing them in front of the cutting edge — which is what makes a bit bog down and burn.

Why 40 mm?

A 40 mm bore is the working size for the bigger service runs: grouped cable through joists and studs, multi-core and armoured cable, pipe runs, ducting and hardware installation. At 100 mm working length it passes clean through a standard joist or a doubled stud in one go, and the 152 mm overall length keeps it short enough to swing in a floor void or a ceiling space where a long auger has nowhere to go.

Softwood and particleboard — not hardwood

This is a softwood and particleboard bit, and Bosch specifically excludes hardwood. It's worth knowing why rather than just noting it.

A self-feeding screw tip pulls with real force. In softwood the timber yields at roughly the rate the thread advances, and the cut stays balanced. In dense hardwood it can't — the thread keeps pulling while the cutting edge stalls, which loads the tip, stops the bit dead and puts all that torque back through the tool and into your wrist. For oak, beech and similar dense timbers, use a bit designed for them instead.

Machine compatibility

The 1/4in (6.35 mm) impact-rated hex shank fits rotary drill drivers and impact drivers, corded or cordless, and locks into a quick-change hex chuck without slipping. It also fits a standard three-jaw chuck.

Working safely and getting the best from the bit

Because the tip self-feeds, let it pull and don't add force — pushing simply overloads the cutting edge. Use a firm two-handed grip, and on a high-torque drill fit the side handle: if a self-feeding bit binds, the tool will try to turn in your hands rather than stall, and 40 mm of spade generates real torque. Keep the drill square to the timber, run at a moderate speed, and back the bit out periodically on deep holes to clear chips. Ease off as the tip breaks through the far face to avoid splintering, or drill from both sides where the finish matters.

When drilling structural timber, remember that where you drill matters as much as how. Holes in joists and studs should sit within the zones permitted by current building regulations — generally on or near the neutral axis and away from mid-span and bearing points. Check the applicable guidance before drilling structural members.
