One radio, every Makita battery you own

Most jobsite radios lock you to a single battery platform. If your drills are 18V LXT and your bigger tools are 40V max XGT, a radio that takes only one of them means carrying a battery that does nothing else.

The MR001GZ01 takes all three: CXT 12V max, LXT 18V and XGT 40V max. Whatever is charged at the end of the day goes in. On a long day, a 40V max 4.0Ah battery runs it for up to 30 hours, so it plays through the week rather than the morning — and when you'd rather keep the batteries for the tools, the AC adaptor jack runs it off the mains instead.

Built to survive a site

Radios live badly on building sites. They get knocked off benches, rained on, buried in dust.

The MR001GZ01 is IP65-rated: dust-tight, and sealed against water jets from any direction — so open-site rain and washdown are not a problem. Around the body, elastomer bumpers absorb impact and metal roll bars take the load if something lands on it or it goes off a scaffold board. At 5.3 kg it is substantial enough to stay where you put it, with a carry handle — which doubles as the FM antenna — for moving it between rooms.

The backlit LCD and illuminated buttons and dial matter more than they sound: first fix in winter, in an unlit shell, is exactly when you can't read an unlit display.

What this radio does and doesn't have

Worth being clear before you buy:

• AM/FM only — this is an analogue AM and FM radio with a digital tuner. It is not a DAB radio.
• No Bluetooth. Audio from a phone connects by cable through the AUX-IN jack.
• No USB port, so it will not charge a phone.
• It does not charge batteries — it runs from them, but it is not a charger.
• Bare unit — no battery and no charger in the box.
