One hole saw, four material groups

Most jobs don't stop at a single substrate. A service run passes through a plasterboard partition, then a steel stud track, then a softwood noggin, then a plastic conduit. Swapping accessories at every layer costs time and leaves you carrying three sets of saws.

This Bosch multi material hole saw handles all four. The bi-metal construction welds a high-speed steel cutting edge onto a tougher, more flexible backing body — the HSS edge holds up in steel where carbon-steel teeth would blunt within a few holes, while the flexible body absorbs shock instead of cracking. The Vario tooth geometry varies the tooth pitch around the crown rather than keeping it constant, which breaks up the harmonic vibration that causes chatter. In practice that means less snagging when the saw passes from board into metal, and less grabbing at breakthrough.

Fitting and use

The threaded mount screws onto a standard threaded hole saw arbor with a pilot drill, so changing diameter is a matter of unscrewing one saw and threading on the next — no slipping, no tool required. It runs on rotary drills and impact drill/drivers alike.

For best results and longest tool life: run at a low to moderate speed with hammer action switched off, let the pilot drill establish the centre before the crown engages, and use light, steady pressure. Hole saws cut by shearing, and over-speeding is the fastest way to blue the teeth. Add cutting fluid in metal and clear the swarf regularly; ease off at breakthrough in board and timber so the saw doesn't snatch. Eject the slug through the side slot as soon as the cut is finished.
