Why five blades and not one

A multi-tool is only as good as the blade in it, and the three cuts professionals need are genuinely different jobs.

Plunge cuts start in the middle of a fixed workpiece with no pilot hole — an opening in a floorboard, a notch in a stud, a cut-out in fitted panel. That is what the three 32 mm AIZ blades are for, and the reason there are three of them is that hardwood, nail-embedded softwood and stainless steel each need a different tooth. Using a wood blade on a hidden nail is how most blades die.

Flush cuts run the blade parallel to a surface — trimming door linings in place, cutting skirting back against a wall, taking a fixed board out without touching what it sits on. The wide AII 65 APB does this, its 65 mm width giving a straight, controlled cut along a face.

Long and curved cuts need the ACZ 85 EB segment blade, whose 85 mm arc keeps cutting through a longer stroke than a straight blade and follows a curve rather than fighting it.

Carbide for metal, bi-metal for everything else

The AIZ 32 AIT is the blade that separates this set from a wood-only one. Stainless steel work-hardens as you cut it: the more a blunt tooth rubs, the harder the material becomes, and a bi-metal blade can lose its edge in a single pipe. Carbide teeth with Bosch's extra coating stay sharp through that, which is where the up to 50x life¹ figure comes from. Use it for stainless pipes, profiles and sheet, and for the fixings a bi-metal blade would round off on.

The four bi-metal (BIM) blades weld a high-speed steel cutting edge to a flexible body — the edge holds up in mixed material, the body flexes instead of snapping when the blade binds mid-plunge. That is what makes them right for wood with nails, where the blade meets timber and steel in the same stroke.

Starlock: why the mount matters

An oscillating tool moves the blade through a tiny arc at very high frequency, so nearly all the wear lands on the joint between blade and machine. A flat clamp bleeds power into vibration.

Starlock uses a three-dimensional form fit — blade and holder interlock across the whole contact surface — so the tool's power goes into the cut, and the blade holds positively under load without slipping. There are no bolts and no hex key: the blade drops in and locks, and comes out again, in around three seconds. Getting the best from the blades

Let the tool reach full speed before contact, then apply steady, moderate pressure — force generates heat, and heat is what takes the temper out of a cutting edge. Start a plunge cut at an angle and rock the blade upright as it enters rather than driving it in flat. Slow the tool down in metal, keep the cut clear, and let the blade cool between long cuts. Shift the blade slightly along its width from time to time so you wear the whole edge rather than one spot. Match the blade to the material — using the wood blade on a hidden nail is the single most common way to ruin one.

Wear eye protection, hearing protection, gloves and a dust mask, and use extraction where the work allows it.
